I hope you are doing well, I pray may God continue to protect and provide for you in Jesus mighty name.
Today, I would like to share about the gift of speaking in tongues.
Among all the gifts of the Holy Spirit, this gift is one of the most rejected, neglected, misunderstood, and badmouthed gift. This is also a mysterious gift – some people who speak in tongues are confused because they do not know what they are saying, and wondering if they are saying the right thing.
I want you to know and understand that the gift of speaking in tongues is the gift of the Holy Spirit.
How is it possible for you to accept Holy Spirit as the gift of God, and not accept the gifts of the Holy Spirit? When you have received the gift of Holy Spirit, you have received the fullness of His personality and power.
The bible says, still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 1 Corinthians 12:10b NLT
Remember, Holy Spirit is the one who give gifts. Some people have not received (and will not receive) the gift of speaking in tongues because they think and believe speaking in tongues is not the work and gift of the Holy Spirit today. But those who believe and desire will surely receive this wonderful gift!
God will give you only what you desire and passionate for, He will not give you anything that you do not like and desire. For example: If you want to give a gift on special occasion, you will give them things they like and need, not what you like, isn’t it? And if you are inviting someone home for a meal, you will prepare what they like.
If you really desire to receive the gift of speaking in tongues, God in His grace and mercies will fulfil your heart’s desire by giving you this gift.
By the way, do you know the disciples of Jesus Christ in the Bible spoke in tongues?
After Jesus’ resurrection from the death and before He ascended to heaven, He met His disciples and gave them an important instruction to wait for the promised Holy Spirit. The disciples of Jesus were waiting for the gift (Holy Spirit) of God in the upper room, as they were waiting we see that “EVERYONE were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in tongues” as the Spirit gave them the utterance. Acts 2:4.
Another incident, as Peter was still speaking to Cornelius and everyone in his house, the Holy Spirit came on ALL of them and they began to speak in tongues. Acts 10:44-46.
Paul when he went to Ephesus, he met few believers of Lord Jesus Christ and asked them “did you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, they said no, because they were unaware of it, then Paul introduces the Holy Spirit to them and Paul laid his hands on them they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues. Acts 19:1-6.
In these three happenings we see that Holy Spirit came on people and they all spoke in unknown language. The believers who saw, heard, and walked with the Lord Jesus, and the newly converts, and also the uninformed people; all received the gift of Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues.
To which category do you belong? Are you waiting believer, are you a new believer, or are you an uninformed believer? You have a hope to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
For those who have already received the gift of speaking in tongues, it’s time to grow in to speak more fluently and frequently.
Paul in his letter to the church in Corinth made an important confession “I speak in tongues more than you all”, and he desired “I wish you all spoke in tongues”. 1 Corinthians 14: 5, 18.
The New Testament Bible was written by the apostles who were filled with the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues.
You can be part of any denomination or any culture, colour, and language. Being filled with the Holy Spirit and exercising the gifts of the Holy Spirit should be a normal and foundational thing.
Why is it important for you to speak in tongues?
- You speak to God: when you are speaking in tongues, you are speaking in your spirit, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to the God who is the Spirit.
- You speak mysteries: when you are speaking in tongues you might not know and understand what you are speaking, but your spirit is praying and prophesying things you are not aware of.
- You edify yourself: when you are speaking in tongues, you enlighten and instruct yourself in the spirit, though your mind, emotions, and body do not understand in the beginning.
- You allow your spirit to pray: when you speak in tongues, you allow your spirit to connect and receive revival to your inner person.
Before I finish, I would like to also tell how to receive the gift of speaking in tongues?
- Desire for this gift
- Ask God to give you this gift,
- Speak by faith as God gives you words,
You will grow in a gift that you use often. Grow in trusting God and being faithful to God by obeying Him.
I pray, may God in His grace and mercies bless you with the gift of speaking in tongues, and may you use this gift to build yourself and serve others in Jesus name. Amen
